Peter R, 70, NY

Almost 50 years ago, I was working as a salesman at a big company. I remember Harry, the maintenance guy saying hello to me every morning. One particular morning I asked him how he was doing and he replied, "Well, Peter. Not so good." I asked him what was wrong, thinking it must be something serious. "My lightbulb went out," Harry responded. In my head, I scoffed at how ridiculous it was. If your lightbulb goes out, buy a new one!

Harry only had one light in his house. He couldn't afford to purchase a new one.

I took a lightbulb out of one of the lights at the office and thought how Harry was really just the lowest of the low.

A few weeks later, we had a company Christmas party. When I arrived, I saw a violin leaned up against

To my surprise, Harry picked up that violin and played it like a professional symphony violinist. "Harry!" I thought. "Of all people, Harry was dragging the bow across that violin, charming us with some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard

That was 50 years ago and I'll never forget it. I'll also never cast judgment on anyone so quickly, because they may reveal secrets I never expected to find.
